Every Two Letter Word You Can Play, In One List

Two letter words rarely score much on their own, but knowing the full list is one of the fastest ways to improve at tile based word games, since they unlock parallel plays that bigger words can't.

There are 96 two letter words in our dictionary, ranging from common ones like AT, IN, and ON to less familiar entries like QI, XI, and ZA. Learning even a handful of the less obvious ones tends to open up far more of the board than memorizing longer words ever does.

Why two letter words matter more than their score suggests

On their own, most two letter words are worth almost nothing. Their real value shows up in parallel play, placing a new word directly next to an existing one so that it also forms a valid short word running the other direction. Strong players lean on two letter words constantly to squeeze extra points out of a board that looks tight.

The ones worth memorizing first

Start with the vowel-heavy ones that come up often: AA, AE, AI, AL, and AY show up more than you'd expect once you start looking for them. From there, the two letter words built around X, Z, Q and J, like XI, ZA, QI, and JO, are worth learning specifically because they let you play your highest value tiles into tight spaces.

Frequently asked questions

How many two letter words are valid in Scrabble?

It depends on which official dictionary you're using. Our own list contains 96 two letter words, which is a close but not identical match to licensed tournament word lists.

Why do experienced Scrabble players memorize two letter words?

They're the key to parallel plays, placing a word next to an existing one so it forms a second valid word running the other direction. That trick alone can add significant points to an otherwise average turn.

Are two letter words worth much on their own?

Rarely. Their value comes from what they unlock elsewhere on the board, not from their own score.

Is QI a real word?

Yes, it refers to a concept of vital energy in Chinese philosophy and is a valid two letter word in our dictionary and most tournament word lists.

What's the fastest way to learn these?

Repetition in actual games tends to stick better than memorizing a flat list. Keep this page open during a few games and you'll pick up the common ones quickly.
