How The Wordfeud Rack And Blank Tiles Actually Work

A Wordfeud rack holds seven tiles at a time, refilled from a shared pool after every turn. Two of those tiles in the full set are blanks, which can represent any letter but score zero points wherever they're placed.

How the rack refills

After each turn, your rack tops back up to seven tiles from the remaining pool, the same basic system used in Scrabble. As the game goes on and the pool shrinks, your options naturally narrow, which is part of why holding onto flexible letters early tends to pay off later.

Blank tiles, in plain terms

A blank can stand in for any letter you need to complete a word, but it always scores zero points for that letter, no matter which one you assign it. Once placed, a blank stays fixed as whatever letter you chose; it doesn't change if the board changes around it later.

Wordfeud's letter distribution versus Scrabble's

Both games use a fixed pool of lettered tiles with different quantities of each letter, but the exact counts aren't identical between the two. Wordfeud also offers different board layouts, including a randomized bonus square arrangement for each game, which Scrabble's standard board doesn't do.

Using all seven tiles in one turn

Clearing your entire rack in a single play typically earns a bonus on top of whatever the word itself scores. It doesn't happen often, since it requires exactly the right letters lining up with exactly the right space on the board, but it's always worth checking for before settling on a smaller play.
